Biodynamics Podcast
We made a Biodynamics podcast for everyone who has ever been curious about what Biodynamics mean, and how it applies to the wines you love. Frey Vineyards is the first certified Biodynamic Winery in the USA! We wanted to share more about what it means to be certified Biodynamic and how that contributes to some truly excellent wine! The field of Biodynamics explores a rich world of connection to the earth, to the cycles of life, and to a true terroir in the world of wine. Join us for this episode of the Frey Vines podcast as we dive into all things Biodynamic!
Organic Grapes Podcast
Episode 2 of the Frey Vines Podcast continues to tell the story of Organic Grapes! There wasn't always an organic certification. In fact, when the Frey's first established Frey Vineyards, there wasn't a federal way to ensure that a product was organic. Today, thanks in large part to the education and activism of the Frey family, there is not only a federal organic certification for wine but also a growing number of wineries that are going organic! Learn more about how we helped pioneer the Organic wine movement in the USA by listening to our “Organic Grapes” epsiode.
The Frey Vines Podcast “Organic Origins”
Welcome to the pilot episode “Organic Origins” of Frey Vines, the podcast devoted to telling the story of organic wine! We’re thrilled to introduce this podcast to all your favorite listening platforms so that you can learn about Frey Vineyards, the first Organic Winery in the USA from the Freys themselves! As pioneers in Organic & Biodynamic wine, we created this podcast because we wanted to share our family’s process of building something special here in Mendocino County, the greenest American Viticultural Area (or AVA for short) in California. Wine Enthusiast declared Mendocino the AVA of the year for 2024 largely because of the wonderful, sustainably produced, and award-winning wines coming out of this beautiful region of Northern California.

Mamavation

Redwood Hedgerow
Happy National Love a Tree Day from Frey Vineyards! May’s Herbal Highlight from the hedgerows is the Redwood tree. Frey Vineyards is located in Redwood Valley, a town just north of Ukiah, California on the Highway 101 corridor. So named for a historic wealth of redwoods, the Northern part of Redwood Valley where the Frey Ranch is located is home to a preserve of redwoods. For the last several decades, the Frey family has been working to conserve over 100 acres of redwood habitat that is adjacent to Frey Vineyards, in conjunction with the Inland Mendocino County Land Trust. These redwood trees are some of the most inland groves of coastal redwoods left, with just a few stands remaining further to the East.
GreenMoney
Frey Vineyards started as a commitment to organic Ag and winemaking when there was none. In 1980, Katrina and Jonathan Frey made their first barrel of wine. They both had become organic farmers, under Alan Chadwick's tutelage, and decided to embark on their enterprise: founding America's first organic winery. With the support of Jonathan's brother Matthew, they built the first winery, became certified organic, and started fermenting Frey wine. Pioneering the only organic winery at the time.
Flowers in the Hedgerows

Rose Hedgerow

Madrone Hedgerow
December’s herbal highlight from is the Madrone Hedgerow on the Frey Ranch Nature Reserve. Biodynamic farming requires that we maintain 10% of our land base for maintaining native plantings. While we far exceed that number, we created this series to show the ecosystem that our grapes are growing in. Our Northern California terroir shines amidst a diverse array of indigenous and cultivated plantings.
The Perennial Mother Garden
The Perennial Mother Garden at the Frey Ranch serves as a home to both roses, cultivated for their healing properties, and a wealth of other plantings that are being propagated to all the gardens that we maintain at Frey.
November Wine of the Month Recipes
Our November Wine of the Month recipes featured our organic Cabernet Sauvignon with an Italian-inspired dinner menu. Lemon chicken, creamy risotto, and a fresh salad featuring sprouts and greens from Mendo Grass: we ate very well for our November wine of the month dinner party!
Olive Hedgerow
November’s highlight is the Olive Hedgerow we planted between two vineyards. This year’s crop brought more olives than we’ve ever harvested before! What a treat to see these trees grow, fruit, and thrive at Frey Vineyards!
